Home Made Wine at the Fair

The 2006 Orangeville Fall Fair saw an
opportunity for home winemakers to
proudly enter their fermented juices for
judging.  Nick Petruzzella, a member of
the Wine Judges of Canada, rated
each wine using a 100 point scale.
Colour, clarity, nose, flavour, balance,
and faults add up to how each wine
scored.

Public Invited to Judging
It is 10:30 Saturday morning at the
Fair.  It is a little strange to watch the
gentleman sitting in front of us,
casually drinking wine and not offering
us any.  With an array of glasses
before him, he looks intently through
each glassful, deftly swirls and sticks
his nose deep into each glass, sips

and slurps each, and to our dismay, spits out the wine!  That one couldn’t have been any good!  He repeats the
routine with each category.  There are Dry Reds, Dry Whites, Dessert or Ice Wines, Country Wines not from Grapes,
and Social/Patio Wines.  This is a tough job Nick has, but someone has to do it.

Sponsorship by Winemakers
This is the seventh year Winemakers, 283 Broadway, has sponsored a home made wine division at the Fair.   While
Winemakers today makes on-premise wines for the public, owner Bob Collin’s roots are in the hobby not the
business.  Twenty five years ago his Shelburne farm provided plenty of elderberries, dandelions, choke cherries,
and the like.  A little fruit, a pinch of yeast, and a sense of adventure mixed together can create wines to be proud of.

Bob says:  “The quality of the judging and the feed back available to wine hobbyists is a wonderful opportunity that
this annual event provides.”
